Revived 'Kangaroo Route' departs Sydney 80 years after original launch

Almost 80 years after Qantas launched the ‘Kangaroo Route’ from Sydney to London, Captain’s Choice has recreated the experience.

Almost 80 years after Qantas launched the ‘Kangaroo Route’ from Sydney to London, Captain’s Choice has recreated the experience.

The 14-day, seven-stop Captain’s Choice route on board a Qantas A330-300 has left Sydney for London, with stops in Darwin, Singapore, Kolkata, Colombo, Cairo, Rome and Toulouse.

Operated since the 1930s, the route earned its legendary moniker in the 1940s as a descriptor for the hops that were reminiscent of a kangaroo.

This trip will be an almost identical flight to the one Qantas wholly operated in 1947. Then, the route took four days with seven stops and had just 29 passengers. This flight can accommodate up to 160.

In Singapore, guests will explore the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum or National Gallery Singapore. There’s also trade-day access to the Singapore Airshow and a gala dinner in the Gardens by the Bay.

In Colombo, guests choose to explore the fortified city of Galle, witness the age-old tradition of stilt fishing, partake in an intimate cooking demonstration in a local home, or meet a legendary Sri Lankan cricketer before an exclusive dinner at the prime minister’s residence.

While in Egypt, there is a private dinner with views of the Pyramids of Giza, and in Cairo, privileged access to the feet of the Sphinx and a private guided tour of the newly inaugurated Grand Egyptian Museum.

In Rome, travellers will enjoy an after-hours private tour of the Vatican Museum, followed by a trip exploring the Eternal City in a vintage car.

A hands-on cooking class reveals the secrets behind authentic Italian pasta, while an optional day trip to Florence allows guests to delve into the genius of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo.

Captain’s Choice Chief Executive Officer Bas Bosschieter says the trip is a long-held dream for the team.

“Given our history with Qantas across many private charters, including our first journey 30 years ago, it feels fitting for Captain’s Choice to be the custodians of this iconic route recreation.

“This journey has all the hallmarks of a Captain’s Choice adventure – an extraordinary collection of destinations, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and a deep connection to history and culture.”

The journey is underway until 16th February.
