You think you know New Zealand skiing, but do you know how to get the best experience for your clients along the country’s newest ski route? New Zealand is a destination synonymous with breathtaking mountains, friendly vibes, and powder that’s up there with the best. Together with our buddies at ANZCRO, we’re putting your NZ ski knowledge to the test with our fun Snow Highway quiz, plus find our how to win a trip there!

Q1: What is the Snow Highway?

  • a) A road across the South Island and is often snowed in and unpassable
  • b) The newest road trip route in New Zealand, touring from Ōtautahi Christchurch to Tekapo/Mt Cook, and through to Queenstown and Wanaka
  • c) The newest ice cream from Streets

If you chose b, you’re a winner! The Snow Highway is the brainchild of NZ’s youngest Olympic Gold-medallist, freestyle skier Nico Porteous, and South, Christchurch Airport’s regional tourism partnership.

Using their love of snow, mountains, and their region, they created an idyllic winter road trip and named it the Snow Highway! Self-driving between top-notch ski fields with fab après ski, while passing the South Island’s drop-dead gorgeous landscapes just can’t be beat!

Q2: What is the recommended Snow Highway road trip length?

  • a) 3 days, 2 nights
  • b) 9 days, 8 nights
  • c) One month

While c, one month, may be every snow bunny’s ideal trip length, the recommended Snow Highway roadie is b, nine days and eight nights. This gives travellers a chance to soak in what makes each destination special without feeling rushed.

Of course, as it’s a self-drive trip, you can help your clients customise their experience to match their vacay days. One easy way to do this is to take advantage of Air New Zealand’s AU to NZ flights (we talked about them here) to save doubling up on the driving.

ANZCRO suggest one night in Ōtautahi Christchurch, two nights in Methven to access Mt Hutt, two nights in Tekapo, and three nights in Queenstown.

Q3: Which ski field on the Snow Highway itinerary has won the most awards?

  • a) The Remarkables, Queenstown
  • b) Treble Cone, Wanaka
  • c) Mt Hutt, Methven

While all ski fields on the Snow Highway are legendary and worthy of a ton of awards, it’s c, Mt Hutt that’s collecting awards like a child collects dolls.

Mt Hutt has won a whopping seven consecutive years as Best NZ Ski Resort. This is thanks to its wide-open terrain, leg-burning runs, and expansive views. It’s a great complement to the Queenstown and Wanaka ski fields.

Nearby Methven has the bonus of being far more cost-effective than Queenstown, helping to extend this fun-filled roadie.

Q4: Where on the Snow Highway can people ski New Zealand’s longest runs?

  • a) Aoraki Mt Cook
  • b) Cardrona
  • c) Coronet Peak

It’s a, Aoraki M Cook! Booking with Ski the Tasman, skiers can enjoy the unmistakeable feeling of a bluebird day breeze on their face as they hurtle down eight- and ten-kilometre-long runs down the country’s largest glacier (boarders, go heli-skiing, instead)!

While basing themselves at the small township of Mount Cook National Park, road trippers can also go off-piste, go glacier kayaking, and explore ice caves!

Q5: What is the standard response for any keen skier and snowboarder when they hear about the Snow Highway?

  • a) Amazing, when can I go?
  • b) Incredible, how do I book?
  • c) Wow, can you book me in right now?
giphy

You’re correct!

All three are common responses when people get the lowdown on all that is discovered along the Snow Highway.

Another response we hear from agents: is how I can get there? In case you missed our recent announcement, ANZCRO have an 8-day prize road trip along Aotearoa’s newest road trip route on offer. And it’s super easy to enter!
