Why have coffee when you can have Irish coffee? Why walk around the office when you can Irish dance? Here’s a quick guide to help you celebrate St Patrick’s Day from work.
Driving around the whole of Ireland would take about the same time as driving from Sydney to Broken Hill. But the little island of Ireland has given so much to the world. It was the first to legalise same sex marriage; from Oscar Wilde to Roddy Doyle, it’s a nation of writers; and it’s given us U2, Guinness, and Michael Fassbender.
So today let’s celebrate Irish culture. Put on something green, raise a pint of Guinness, and pretend to be more Irish than you are.
Embrace the shamrock
Time to turn your office into a leprechaun’s paradise! Stick up shamrocks, where a green shirt and eat green food. Why not take a clover leaf out of Chicago’s book and dye your loo water green. It may not be the Chicago River, but it’s still a body of water.
Drink Irish
Green water may not appeal, but what about a green Guinness? Or just any Guinness? Not a fan of colcannon? A pint of Guinness is probably more filling. I’m more a Kilkenny girl and will never touch Jameson’s again after an ill-conceived night at the Dublin distillery while on antibiotics. PSA: hangovers and Irish dancing do not a fun combination make. But each to their own.
Eat soda bread
This is a great way to soak up the Guinness/Kilkenny/Jamesons (and hopefully not all at once). Here’s a recipe for those working from home.
Get Irish-jiggy with it
You may not be the lord of the dance, but you can Irish dance like no one’s watching. So pop on some Pogues and tap and kick to your heart’s content. Just don’t you dare move those arms. And if a client happens to choose that exact moment to come in, you can also practice some epic acting a la Jamie Dornan.
Rap battle, limerick style
Nothing says St Patrick’s Day like a good limerick contest! Challenge your colleagues to come up with the funniest limerick they can. Bonus points if it includes as many Irish cliches as possible. Though the true challenge is keeping them clean…
