The Qantas Group has announced that Jetstar CEO Gareth Evans will resign in December after having spent 23 years with the airline group.
Investors and analysts were seeing Evans as one of the top contenders to succeed Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce when the current CEO of Qantas since 2008 eventually steps down.
Evans, however, will remain with the group to work on key projects before leaving in 2023, the airline said, adding that an internal recruitment process was underway to appoint a new CEO for Jetstar.
“Gareth has been a superb leader and member of the senior executive team for many years,” Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said.
“He’s given an incredible amount to the organisation in several key roles, from his time as CFO through major restructuring and most recently as Jetstar CEO as we navigated COVID.
“When he leaves next year it will be with our sincere thanks and best wishes.
“We spend a lot of time developing our internal talent pipelines for succession opportunities like this and we’ll be appointing a new Chief Executive for Jetstar soon.”
Several other potential successors have already left over the years for CEO roles elsewhere, due in part to Joyce’s unusually long tenure.
