Aviation professionals may say Qatar Airways is among the best airlines in the world along with Singapore Airlines, Etihad, Qantas, ANA, and Emirates, but what does the general public think on TripAdvisor?

Those who are actually boarding flights and getting the first-hand experience of aircraft and service have had their say and according to them, the best airline in the world isn’t Qatar Airways or anyone else listed above, but rather Singapore Airlines.

The Singaporean national carrier, which was bumped from the top spot in the SKYTRAX list this year, was named number one because of its quality food, friendly staff and for all round impressive service.

Singapore Airlines’ Chief Executive, Goh Choon Phong, welcomed the news, saying the award validates staff’s “hard work”.

Coming in second place and also named ‘Best Airline in the South Pacific’, was Air New Zealand for serving complimentary New Zealand wine in Economy and for featuring entertaining safety videos.

Air New Zealand

Following Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand in the top 10 list was Emirates, Japan Airlines, EVA Air, Southwest Airlines, Jet2.com, Qatar Airways, Azul and Korean Air.

Unfortunately, no Australian airlines appeared in this year’s top 10, however, Qantas was named ‘Best Airline in Australia’ and second-best airline in the South Pacific, just before Virgin Australia.

Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of airline reviews and ratings submitted by travellers worldwide, over a 12-month period on TripAdvisor Flights.
