F1 owner buys Australian-based sports travel company, Sportsnet Holidays

Liberty Media Corporation, the company that owns Formula 1, Sirius XM and Live Nation, among other brands, has acquired Melbourne-based sports travel company, Sportsnet Holidays.

Liberty Media Corporation, the company that owns Formula 1, Sirius XM and Live Nation, among other brands, has acquired Melbourne-based sports travel company, Sportsnet Holidays.

Sportsnet Holidays is a retail travel package business that connects fans with their favourite events through official ticket and accommodation travel packages.

Earlier this year, Liberty Media bought its parent company, QuintEvents, in a transaction worth US$313 million (around AU$480 million). With this, came the acquisition of Sportsnet Holidays.

While the company will remain fully independent of Liberty, it will now have access to more sports events and destinations for its customers, thanks to the support of what it calls one of the biggest players in world sport.

“This is a transformative moment for Sportsnet’s future,” Sportsnet Holidays Founder Rob Cecconi said.

“From when we started this company 25 years ago until today, we’ve existed to connect sports fans looking for unforgettable experiences and make it as easy as possible to attend their favourite sporting events around the globe.

“With the ongoing support of Quint under Liberty Media’s ownership, Sportsnet will be able to realise this mission on a scale we only ever dreamed of until now.”

Sports travel is big business in a sports-mad country like Australia.

Quint CEO Brian Ruede said the company was thrilled with Sportsnet’s acquisition “and what it means to our group of companies over the long term”.

“Our suppliers and customers alike will be well served by our ability to leverage a global synergy unlike anything they’ve seen before, bringing world-class experiences to life inside and outside the sports venue,” he added.

This year, the biggest sports travel event on the calendar is undoubtedly the Paris 2024 Olympics & Paralympics Summer Games. With Australian travellers showing a keen interest in the events, Amadeus data revealed a big increase in global flight searches to France from 23 July to 15 August 2024 – up 25 per cent on the same period last year.
