Western Australians were able to see The Great Southern Land fly over its capital city this week, when the aircraft completed its first cross-country trip.

The Qantas Dreamliner flew from Victoria to the West Coast of Australia on Wednesday, where she rested for an evening before returning to Melbourne.

Plane spotters gathered at Perth Airport to welcome the aircraft on its inaugural visit, which Qantas’ boss, Alan Joyce said was designed to kick start an “exciting new era” of direct travel to ultra long haul destinations such as London and possibly one day, Seattle, Rio de Janiero or Cape Town.

“From the distance it’s able to fly, to the attention to detail we’ve put into the cabin design, it will reshape what people come to expect from international travel.”

Alan Joyce, Qantas Chief Executive

Aussies keen to be among the first to travel on Qantas’ Dreamliner can do so between 3 November and 15 December as the aircraft travels on weekdays between Melbourne and Perth. Up to 9 December, the aircraft will fly between Melbourne-Sydney on weekends.

Following the six-week domestic period, the aircraft will move off local flights to commence direct Melbourne-Los Angeles services.
