Goodbye, middle seat dread and having to awkwardly sit opposite a stranger. These funky new pods could be the future of business class, offering more privacy and a super tailor-made flying experience.

Airlines have been using the downtime COVID-19 has forced upon them by adapting their health and safety protocols, fun new projects, and innovative ideas for the future.

We’ve had Lufthansa announce ‘Sleepers’ Row’, Emirates get its delivery of the first biofuel A380 and Air New Zealand release its newest (and totally amazing) air safety video.

Not to mention the contactless airport experience and predictions for what the future of travel will look like.

But what else do you think we could see over the next few years? Pod seats, perhaps?

Pod seats

Business Class Pods

Some years from now, you might be walking onto a plane and feeling like you’ve stepped into the Tron movie set.

Say hello to these funky and totally futuristic pod seats, that could be used as the new business class cabin.

The brains behind the pods is Factorydesign London, who name the honeycomb-like setup, “Air Lair”.

Each pod setup would allow passengers to have a more personalised flying experience. In each pod, you would be able to control the temperature, airflow, lighting, and entertainment settings. Plus, safe and snug in your little cocoon keeps a greater separation from others, meaning a more hygienic environment.

These pods would be stacked on top of each other (in a staggered formation) – almost like a Vietnamese sleeper bus (but much nicer!) and could be arranged to accommodate single travelers, couples, and even families.

Would you love to travel in one of these?

HeadZone

Factorydesign has also recently announced it has partnered with Global Aviation, an aircraft parts company, to produce and distribute the design of its HeadZone product.

Airlines have been very interested in the product, due to its COVID-safe passenger separation concept, which is an affordable product, designed to help economy class passengers feel safer and healthier in their seats.

The HeadZone unit works by being placed over the back of the airline seat and the ‘ears’ are then folded out to create a head and face shield, giving a greater sense of physical separation.

What do you think about the future of flying? Do you like these ideas for more of an individual and socially distanced flying experience?
