Help rebuild Nepal. Where you can donate today

Competition in the industry runs strong, but so too does support - this is no more evident than in the wake of Nepal's destructive 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Competition in the industry runs strong, but so too does support – this is no more evident than in the wake of Nepal’s destructive 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Airlines, wholesalers and the Australian Government are stepping in to provide aid to the country, as it deals with the aftermath of its worst natural disaster since the 1920s.

Various industry groups have either ramped up donation funds for travellers to assist or provided aid money direct from their profits.

See how the industry has responded to the quake and how you can show your support below:

The Intrepid Group

The Intrepid Group’s not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, launched a Nepal fundraising appeal.

Within the first 24 hours of the launch, the appeal received AU$50,000. As of this morning, the foundation has raised AU$70,000.

Intrepid offered to match traveller donations dollar-for-dollar to assist with emergency relief in Nepal, and originally set a target of AU$40,000 for the appeal.

Intrepid has now announced that it will match traveller donations up to a target of AU$200,000 – with The Intrepid Foundation contributing up to AU$100,000 to the appeal.

“We want to raise as much as possible for local families in Kathmandu, and so by matching donations dollar-for-dollar, we are encouraging people to give generously.”

James Thornton, Intrepid Group Managing Director

The appeal is raising funds for Plan International, a long-term partner of The Intrepid Foundation.

The children’s charity has been working in Nepal for more than 30 years to offer impoverished children to access, health, education and protection.

Plan International has sent emergency teams to respond to the needs of children and families affected by the earthquake in the Kathmandu Valley, with the immediate priority of supporting children’s core needs of shelter, water, health care, and essential child protection mechanisms.

All donations will go directly to Plan International with any administration costs entirely funded by Intrepid Group.

United Airlines

United Airlines Header

United Airlines is working with disaster relief partners the American Red Cross, Americares, Airlink and Operation USA to provide aid to those affected by the earthquake in Nepal.

Beginning today, United will provide up to a total of $50,000 to match donations to these partner organisations from United customers and employees.

The airline will also provide a one-time mileage bonus to MileagePlus members who donate. United will contribute up to five million miles for this initiative.

MileagePlus members who give between $50-99 will receive 250 bonus miles, those who contribute $100-249 will receive 500 bonus miles, and members who donate more than $250 will receive 1,000 bonus miles.

Up to five million bonus miles will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis based on contributions made through the airline’s fundraising page through 15 May 2015.

MileagePlus members with accrued miles can also donate their miles to a charity through United’s Charity Miles program.

Many international relief organisations send personnel and volunteers to assist in the affected region, and the donation of miles will help defray their expenses.

Through these programs, MileagePlus members can donate a minimum of 500 miles to any of the designated groups involved in the relief effort.

G Adventures

G Adventures has launched a $75,000 aid appeal in response to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated Kathmandu, Nepal and surrounding areas. Funds raised will support the long-term recovery of the affected communities.

Planeterra and G Adventures have a successful track record of supporting efforts in countries the tour operator travels to, creating a positive impact by working with local partners on sustainable projects needed to make a long-term difference.

G Adventures covers all administration costs so 100 percent of all donations will directly benefit the initiative.

G Adventures Founder Bruce Poon Tip said the world is such an amazing place and has provided so much that when it is in trouble “it is our duty to step up and return the favour”.

“Nepal needs our help. Relief agencies are already mobilizing to provide food, shelter, and medicine to those affected by the earthquake, but it doesn’t end there. It will take months, even years to rebuild the country.”

Bruce Poon Tip, G Adventures Founder
