Vivid Sydney 2023 breaks festival benchmark for record audiences – IRL & on social

Wrapping on 17 June 2023, Vivid Sydney has exceeded all records in its 13-year history, reaching more than 649 million people across 23 nights via the #vividsydney hashtag and lighting up social media with an 84 per cent increase in reach on last year.

Wrapping on 17 June 2023, Vivid Sydney has exceeded all records in its 13-year history, reaching more than 649 million people across 23 nights via the #vividsydney hashtag and lighting up social media with an 84 per cent increase in reach on last year.

Vivid Sydney not only broke festival attendance records with 3.28 million people, but it also set a new festival benchmark for content with a social reach of 649 million worldwide.

Destination NSW compiled its most-shared list based on #vividsydney uploads on TikTok and Instagram.

The festival’s most-shared light artwork on social media was Dark Spectrum, an immersive experience in Wynyard Tunnels in collaboration with Vivid Sydney, Sony Music UK, Culture Creative and Mandylights that’s still on display until 16 July.

Written in the Stars, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest drone show, was also one of the most-shared productions during Vivid Sydney.

Rounding out the top five light projections and installations was the Lightscape activation in Royal Botanic Garden Sydney (until 16 July); Lighting of the Sails: Life Enlivened (2023), highlighting the work of artist John Olsen on the Sydney Opera House; and Dandelion, an interactive installation by Sydney public art collective Amigo & Amigo.

Vivid Sydney’s light projections and installations also attracted visiting celebs in attendance for shows and events, including Hollywood actress Jennifer Coolidge, K-pop group BLACKPINK’s Jisoo and chef Nigella Lawson.

Vivid Sydney Festival Director Gill Minervini said: “It has been a record-breaking year for Vivid Sydney. I couldn’t be prouder of what the festival has achieved in 2023 and how it highlighted our creative industries at its best.”
