How are Aussies travelling? Pretty well, actually. With borders reopening en masse in 2022, many Australians took to Google to sate their wanderlust and search for international travel.

Here are Australia’s top 10 Google travel searches for 2022 by destination.

10. New York

'New' York is an ever-evolving, ever-exciting destination where something new is always popping up.

NYC was the 10th-highest search destination for Aussies on Google. Air New Zealand also launched a non-stop flight from Auckland to NYC this year, offering more options for Antipodean travellers to visit the Big Apple.

9. Vietnam

The Intrepid Travel Index 2022 revealed that Vietnam was the second-most popular destination for Aussies after Australia. Google searches showed Hoi An was of particular interest.

8. Hawai’i

Hawaii

Aussies are spoilt for flight options to Hawai’i, a perennially popular hotspot that reopened to Australian travellers in November 2021. Even the recent volcano eruption has become a tourism drawcard.

7. Thailand

The South-East Asian nation reopened to international visitors in October 2022, however Thailand has always trended with Aussie holidaymakers. Thailand came in as our seventh-highest searched destination for 2022.

6. Singapore

A high-search volume destination for both leisure and business travellers, it’s no surprise to see Singapore flights trending in 2022. Singapore was also one of the first nations to create a ‘travel bubble’ with Australia in late 2021.

5. London

With visiting friends and relatives (VFR) high on Aussies’ agendas this year, London was calling with Karryon Founder Matt Leedham one of many to head to the UK. Sydney–London flights were the fifth-highest search.

Fiji is open for happiness

The island paradise was one of the first South Pacific nations to reopen to international tourism and boy, did we Aussies embrace our Pacific neighbour. Flight searches to Fiji cracked the top-five most-searched destinations.

Similar to London, VFR fuelled flight searches over the ditch. ‘New Zealand travel declaration’ was the third-highest travel search on Google in 2022 due to Kiwis wanting to return home after the country’s strict border restrictions eased.

2. Japan

Despite only opening fully to international tourism in October, Japan was the second-highest destination for Google searches, coming in at number two. This tracks with tour providers and airlines recording overwhelming demand for travel to the East Asian nation once restrictions eased.

Unsurprisingly, Bali topped the list of Google’s most-searched travel destinations in 2022 for Aussies. With more capacity and new direct flights available from Australia to the Indonesian island, it’s no wonder this destination continues to trend.
