Launched Sunday, Qantas has kicked off non-stop flights between Melbourne and Jakarta, Indonesia.

Utilising its Airbus A330 aircraft on the route, Qantas will operate the direct flights three times per week.

The new flights add to the national carrier’s existing daily flights between Sydney and Jakarta, with the two services offering almost 300,000 seats annually between Australia’s busiest two hubs and the Indonesian capital.

The MEL-CGK service marks the fourth international route the carrier has added to the Melbourne network since borders reopened, joining flights to Delhi, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Tokyo Haneda, which replaced Tokyo-Narita flights that operated prior to the pandemic.

Business AND pleasure

Qantas expects both leisure and corporate travellers to love the new service, which can connect passengers to destinations like Surabaya and Medan.

Qantas Domestic and International CEO Andrew David said QF was seeing “really strong demand for travel to and from Melbourne, so we’re pleased to be expanding our international network with another new route of out Victoria”.

“Jakarta is becoming an increasingly important destination for our corporate travellers,” he added.

“These direct flights offer more choice and make it even easier for them to do business with one of Australia’s closest neighbours.

“The route is also a great opportunity for more Indonesians to explore the best of Victoria or visit family and friends, with the flights launching in time for the Lebaran holiday period.

“We’d like to thank the Victorian Government and Melbourne Airport for their support on the launch of this new route.”

In total, the Qantas Group operates up to 106 return flights per week between Australia and Indonesia.

Last month, Qantas began rolling out new menus across all cabins on its international flights, some of which will feature on the Melbourne-Jakarta service.

The flying roo also recently added 12 more months for flyers to use their COVID travel credits.

After a three-year hiatus, Qantas has also announced the return of its Best of North America day on 4 July. Check out your invitation.
