The snow has fallen in New Zealand and Coronet Peak is officially open for the season; kicking it off with a cool first Night Ski to celebrate.
Grab your goggles and get excited about the trans-Tasman bubble reopening next week, because Coronet Peak is open for winter fun in the mountains.
From 30 June, the first skiers and boarders can tear up the slopes from 9am.
Snowmaking has been blasting out at 320 litres per second since Monday morning. Add in 25cm of wind-affected snow from Monday night and Coronet Peak is across the line.
In an email announcement, Nigel Kerr, Ski Area Manager said “we are looking at a staged opening with Coronet Express, Meadows and the Carpets running from day one. We will then look wider to Greengates and the T-Bar as conditions allow.
“My tip for opening day is to grab the fats from the quiver. Off piste has a mix of new and man-made snow that will offer a lot of scope but also challenges.”
The opening has come a week later than planned, but a massive season is still expected.
Night Ski gets underway opening night (30 June), with Coronet Peak’s usual après vibe and live music from DJ Charlie Charalambides.
Then, Saturday 3 July is set to be an even bigger night with DJ Stubacca spinning on the deck from 5pm and local legends the Crown Rangers live from 7pm. It’s free to attend, and part of the Welcome to Winterfestival so get on down there! Don’t forget, if you’re keen to hit the slopes, you’ll need to grab a Twilight or Night Ski pass.
On Sunday 4 July, don’t miss the Mountain Fun Day! There is something for everyone including a snowman building competition (where you can get creative), bobsleigh races, and the famous Dash for Cash. All events have great prizes up for grabs!
