We love sustainability at Karryon. It fills us with the warm-and-fuzzies when we hear businesses not just saying they’ll reduce their impact in the world but actually committing to it with action. This is why we love Mastercard’s blueprint (greenprint?) for a more sustainable future.

Leading the change

Mastercard are tackling the challenge of climate change head on

Mastercard has been talking about sustainability for quite some time. More than a decade ago, in fact, shifting gears to more financial inclusion, heightened data responsibility, and stewardship of the environment.

In 2018, they also launched their Sustainable Card Program with over 330 issuers across 80 countries signed up and on board. Major card manufacturers have helped transition more than 168 million Mastercard cards to recycled and bio-based materials.

The focus on change is internal, too. At Mastercard global offices, there’s a focus on green buildings, reduced emissions, and renewable energy.

Yes, recycled Cash Passport cards are here!

Did you know that 100% recycled Cash Passport cards are already here for Australian and New Zealand travellers? You do now!

The Cash Passport recycled card is made from discarded PVC products on their way to the landfill. Like a stray kitten rescued from the roadside, this abandoned PVC now has a new home – in your client’s wallets on their adventures near and far.

The benefits of recycled PVC include:

  • Able to be recycled several times
  • Reduced energy process to recycle
  • Reducing landfill waste
  • Repurposing industrial waste
  • Can be incinerated eventually and used for energy

All this without impacting the shelf-life of a Cash Passport card!

Compostable payment cards are coming

Mastercard’s putting the pedal to the metal and accelerating its efforts to remove first-use PVC plastics from payment cards. From 1 January 2028, all newly produced Cash Passport and Mastercard payment cards will use even more sustainable materials. This is a first for any payment network!

Mastercard’s new card materials go through a rigorous third-party auditor and certification program, including checks for compostability, reduced energy consumption, and waste. Plus, the benchmarks will shift annually for continued environmental impact reductions.

How to spot an eco-friendly card

With most consumers wanting support as they make conscious sustainability decisions for their homes and the planet, it’s no surprise that Mastercard is making it easy to spot when a card supports that goal.

CashPassportcards green

See that little green logo on the back of the card, bottom right? That‘s the Card Eco Certification mark to identify a card made more sustainably, be it recyclable, bio-sourced, chlorine-free, or using degradable or ocean plastics.

With every swipe or tap of a card, the badge serves as a reminder towards personal and broader sustainability goals.

Supporting better choices

Travellers are making more eco-friendly decisions every day

That’s not all the great green choices that Mastercard has made! They created the Priceless Planet Coalition in 2020, uniting merchants, banks, cities, and consumers to restore 100 million trees!

As part of the coalition, they launched the handy Mastercard carbon calculator tool, assisting consumers in making more environmentally informed spending decisions.

Checking out the carbon footprint of a purchase may seem scary if you’ve recently found yourself binge online shopping on a Sunday night (whoops). Mastercard know, however, from a survey of 24 countries people want to make better choices, and they welcome the tools to support them.
