Emerald Cruises names travel advisor as godmother of newest ship as Astra is christened

Emerald Cruises has christened Emerald Astra, its 10th river Star-Ship, in Amsterdam, naming travel advisor Toni Lanotte-Day godmother as Scenic Group turns 40.

Emerald Cruises has christened Emerald Astra, its tenth river Star-Ship, in Amsterdam, with travel advisor Toni Lanotte-Day named godmother, as Australian-founded Scenic Group marks 40 years.

Emerald Cruises & Tours has officially christened Emerald Astra during a ceremony in Amsterdam on 31 May 2026, adding the 10th Star-Ship to its European river fleet. The vessel sails the Rhine, Main and Danube, the core rivers on most first-time Europe itineraries.

The launch is the latest step in an expansion run by the Australian-founded Scenic Group, which marks its 40th anniversary in 2026. The ship is built through the group’s in-house ship building division, MKM Yachts.

In a notable nod to the trade, leading travel advisor and entrepreneur Toni Lanotte-Day was named godmother of the vessel, recognising her support of the brand and the role travel advisors play in the cruise industry’s growth.

Why a travel advisor as godmother

The godmother role is usually reserved for celebrities or industry figures, so handing it to a working advisor is a deliberate signal of where Emerald sees its sales channel.

“Emerald Astra reflects the vision for the growth of Emerald Cruises brand globally. Contemporary, immersive and connected to the destinations we sail,” said Glen Moroney, Founder & Chairman of Scenic Group.

“Naming Toni as godmother recognises the role travel advisors have played in building Scenic Group and the role they will continue to play in shaping our future.”

Lanotte-Day described the role as both symbolic and representative of the broader travel advisor community.

“In maritime tradition, being a godmother represents luck, protection and prosperous journeys ahead,” she said.

“But I also see it as representing the travel advisors who believe in this product and help bring it to life for their clients.”

What is coming next for the fleet

Emerald Astra joins a fleet with a deep pipeline. Emerald Kaia launched in April 2026, with Emerald Raiya and Emerald Lumi to follow in 2027 and Emerald Xara in 2028. Emerald Lumi will mark the brand’s first sailing on the Seine, with roundtrip cruises from Paris.

Of most interest to the Australian market, Emerald Xara is set to operate new itineraries spanning Asia, Australia and the South Pacific, opening warm-water options closer to home alongside the brand’s established European river and Mediterranean yacht product.
