Throwback Thursday: Vintage airline ads from the Golden Age of Travel

The 1930s to early 60s were a golden age of travel, and although most of us weren't around to experience flying during this time, it doesn't mean we can't appreciate these nostalgic airline ads.

The 1930s to early 60s were a golden age of travel, and although most of us weren’t around to experience flying during this time, it doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate these nostalgic airline ads.

Here are seven airline ads – replete with vintage charm and glamour – that takes us back to an earlier time in aviation history.

 

1. Qantas.

Qantas began flying in 1920 and is the third oldest airline in the world, after Dutch carrier KLM and Avianca – the national airline of Colombia.

 

2. TWA.

Although no longer flying, Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major American airline from 1925 until 2001.

 

3. British Airways

A relative newcomer to the aviation world, British Airways was established as an airline on 31 March 1974 after the dissolution of BOAC (a state-owned airline created in 1940) and BEA (British European Airways, operational from 1946 until 1974).

 

4. United.

United Airlines was founded in 1926, and traces its roots to Varney Air Lines – an air mail service.

 

5. Delta Air Lines.

Delta Air Lines was created on 30 May 1924. The first plane in its fleet was actually a converted crop duster.

 

6. Random European airlines.

KLM was founded in 1919 by a young aviation lieutenant named Albert Plesman.

 

7. Random US airlines.

Pan American Airways, otherwise known as Pan Am, was the largest carrier in the US from 1927 until its collapse on 4 December 1991.
