Witches, capes and broomsticks: Carnival Cruise Lines' Halloween spectacle

The spookiest night of the year came and went over the weekend, with millions of people around the world dressing up and celebrating the scary side of life, all in the name of Halloween.

The spookiest night of the year came and went over the weekend, with millions of people around the world dressing up and celebrating the scary side of life, all in the name of Halloween.

From Sydney to New York to Tokyo, the city streets were alive with ghastly ghosts, wretched witches and Frankenstein-esque creatures, great and small – either on their way to or from a Halloween party.

It was an occasion celebrated by peeps from all walks of life, from regular Joes and Janes to A-list celebrities, such as Mariah Carey – who, dressed up as a devil, sizzled her way through Halloween, along with hubby Nick Cannon and kids.

No sign of, ahem… James Packer though. That could have been a nightmare.

And of course, the Aussie travel industry got into the spirit of Halloween too, with travel companies doing their best to inject some spook into their spectacles (make sure you check out the ten scariest airport codes).

Such as Carnival Cruise Lines, who treated the 2,600 guests onboard the superliner Carnival Spirit to a spectacular display as a coven of witches swooped on the 88,500-tonne cruise ship.

KarryOn was on board too for the Carnival Corporation 2016 Partnership Summit. Read all about it here.

Check out a video of Carnival’s epic Halloween festivities below:

The spectacle took place as the ship arrived in stunning Sydney Harbour at dawn on the eve of Halloween.

The witches, fully decked out in black hats, flowing capes and flying brooms, were a sight to sea (ha!) and were the perfect prelude to the haunted holiday, which officially falls on 31 October.

And it was totally unique too.

I mean, have you ever seen a witch water ski, wakeboard or parasail before? And have you ever seen a two-storey high redback clung to the side of a cruise ship?

Nope, us neither!

Although traditionally an American holiday, Halloween is celebrated on Carnival Cruise Lines’ two Australian ships, Carnival Spirit and Carnival Legend, and guests onboard these ships are able to enjoy the haunted holiday at sea by taking part in costume parties, trick or treating, and just getting their scary on.

But nothing could ever compare to such an incredible spectacle as witches descending on an unsuspecting cruise ship in the heart of Sydney Harbour.

Great job Carnival Cruise Lines.
