2017 may only be a couple weeks in, but JetBlue has already made its way into news headlines for giving travellers exactly what they want – free inflight wi-fi.

The carrier, which spent a lot of time in the news last year for giving away free flights on two occasions and making history in Cuba, revealed plans this week to make domestic travel a little more enjoyable by removing the charge on internet access.

The move comes three years after the carrier introduced gate-to-gate wi-fi, and according to the airline, will make JetBlue the first US airline to offer free internet on domestic flights across its entire fleet, CNN Money reported.

JetBlue’s Vice President of Marketing, Jamie Perry, said in addition to saving on wi-fi, guests will also enjoy evenly distributed speed thanks to the carrier’s provider Fly-Fi, which has found a way to fairly divide bandwidth among devices on board.

“We have designed a way to offer the same amount of bandwidth to every device.”

He used a recent flight from Boston to San Francisco as an example, where 190 devices were connected at once and everyone “could still stream video smoothly”.

Meanwhile, over in Australia, travellers are patiently waiting for Qantas’ super-fast AND free wi-fi, which is expected to launch next year.

The Flying Kangaroo revealed late last year that it was cooking up internet access that would not only keep travellers connected but also improve aspects of flying. Click here for more information.
