Aussie yearn for a trip to Victoria’s capital and they crave a dinner by Sydney’s Harbour but did you know they’d rather take a walk through MONA than spread out under the Queensland sun?

Has the littlest state of them all (in Australia), Hobart, really overtaken the sunniest?

Sorry Little Britain, but in this case, survey says yes.

Hobart has replaced Brisbane as the third most desired local city Aussies want to visit in the next two years.

According to Royal Morgan’s Holiday Tracking Survey, some 1.75m Australians flagged Tasmania’s capital as a place they’d like to visit by 2020, up 500,000 on the 1.7m who selected Brisbane.

While the two battle it out for the third spot, Melbourne managed to remain the most desired domestic destination among Aussie holidaymakers (4.25m), ahead of Sydney (2.4m).

The country’s capital, Canberra, came in as the fifth capital city Aussies wanted to visit (1.4m), indicated that maybe Lonely Planet is onto something when it says it’ll be the third most desired destination in the world in 2018.

Roy Morgan’s Chief Executive, Michele Levine, said it’s exciting to see interest in Australia’s second tier cities growing strongly among locals.

While Hobart sits at third, Canberra is the fifth most desired domestic city.

“The increasing allure of Hobart is demonstrated by the fact Hobart was the only capital city to experience growth in all three key Generations in the past two years – Generation Y, Generation X and the Baby Boomers and overtaking Brisbane is remarkable when one considers the respective populations of the two cities – Hobart (225,000) is less than a tenth the size of Brisbane (2.36 million),” the CEO said.

“Adelaide and Canberra have also experienced solid growth in recent years with savvy marketing campaigns no doubt hitting the right notes in targeting the key demographics essential to growing a city’s tourist appeal.”

“In contrast to the cities already mentioned, the continued decline of Perth as a desired holiday destination in recent years has continued although that decline has slowed.

“Only a few years ago Perth was regarded as Australia’s third-most desired capital city destination however as we end 2017 Perth finds itself down in sixth position with Adelaide closing fast.”
